YOUR SCOUT GROUP
THE HISTORY OF THE GROUP
The 22nd Southampton City scout Group was formed in 1938 with the aim of providing young people with an outdoor activities opportunity.
During the time the Group has been established as one of the main youth providers in our area of Southampton.
We were the first group in our area to welcome female members and this policy has naturally developed to welcome all to our group under a clear equal opportunities policy.
RESOURCES
We have our own Headquarters in Whitehouse Gardens, Regents Park, Southampton. This is a fine facility for our regular programmed meetings and is also used by the Scout District.
We also offer our Headquarters for other community events such as meetings, parties and other community functions.
We have a committed team of Adult Leaders and Helpers and a very supportive group of parents who value greatly what we are trying to provide to our young people.
However, our main asset is our one hundred young people who provide us with the encouragement to develop and expand all that we do and offer them.
RELATIONSHIP WITH FUNDERS AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
We support various community organizations and encourage our young people to be good citizens.
We wish to develop close links with all those organizations that support us and help us to support our young people.
MANAGEMENT OF THE GROUP
The group has a team of Leaders who organize the activity programme for our youngsters. The Management of the Group affairs is the responsibility of the Group Executive Committee. The following Committee structure is in place:
>> Chairman Mr. Barrie Worth
>> Treasurer Mr. Brendan Purvis
>> Secretary Mr. Ian Wide
>> 7 Committee Members
THE SERVICE THAT WE PROVIDE
The Group consists of the following three units:
>> Beaver Section: Young People Aged 6yrs - 8yrs
>> Cub Section: Young People Aged 8yrs - 10.5 yrs
>> Scout Section: Young People Aged 10.5 yrs - 14yrs
>> Explorer Scouts: Young People Aged 14 yrs - 18 yrs
We endeavor to provide a balanced programmed of activities, which excite and teach the youngsters to develop into good citizens. We prioritize the opportunity to enjoy the out door life and experience the countryside.
GROUP DEVELOPMENT NEEDS
The Group development needs fall into three main categories:
HEADQUARTERS
We hold a number of HQ maintenance days and are lucky to gain the support of our parents who offer their time to help us carry out the responsibility of ensuring that our HQ is safe for the children, Adult Leaders, Helpers and the Community who hire our Headquarters.
We are looking at developing the HQ to provide more space and to provide improved toilet and shower facilities for our users. This will involve an extension to the front of the building. Along with this project we are looking to provide accessible toilet facilities in line with the New DDA legislation. We have children and Scout Fellowship members who are wheel chair bound and need to desperately provide suitable facilities for them.
Also under health and safety we would like to provide hot hand washing and shower facilities.
Our Headquarters has a small amount of asbestos within it, which we need to remove or manage.
We would also like to improve the general security of our site and buildings with improved fencing.
EQUIPMENT
Throughout the year we take our young people away camping. This is a very costly enterprise. We need to develop and replace some of our camping equipment and tents.
We are a large group with over a hundred members and when we go to camp as a group it involves a substantial amount of camping equipment.
STAFFING
We also need to develop our Adult Leader and Helpers Team. We have many young people and a substantial waiting list's of youngsters who wish to join in the fun.
Unfortunately we cannot expand the membership without the Adult Team being available to supervise them.
